.fr is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) in the Domain Name System of the Internet for France. Along with .re and .tf, it is administered by AFNIC.

The .fr top-level domain is divided into a number of second-level domains:

  • tm.fr - for owners of trademarks
  • asso.fr - for associations
  • nom.fr - for surnames
  • prd.fr - for research and development programs
  • presse.fr - for press publications
  • com.fr - open to all applicants without justification of the requested name
  • gouv.fr - for the French administration

AFNIC reserves the right to introduce additional sector-based second-level domains. Registrations are processed via accredited registrars.

Under Attack

When the French resumed Nuclear Tests in the Pacific Ocean in 1995, New Zealand and Australian IRC users saw .fr users as fair game for verbal attacks about "what they were allowing their government to do in the Pacific Ocean". Several IRC Channels with French names were over taken and in at least one case a French IRC server was crashed.
