From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
13 Japanese Birds is a 13 CD series by the Japanese noise musician Merzbow.
The series is part of Merzbow's recent return to live drums. The albums were recorded one-a-month and Masami frequently revisited older recordings. The music was inspired by Olivier Messiaen's Catalogue d'oiseaux, but has no direct relationship.[1]
They were released by Important Records from January 2009 to January 2010.[2] Each album is limited to 1,000 copies. They were also available by subscription; as just the CDs or with a custom-made bamboo box. Also available only with the box was an acrylic-on-bamboo painting by Masami Akita.
On March 17 they were packaged together in a tote bag as Ecobag aka 13 Japanese Birds in a Bag with a bonus CDR of additional material from the sessions and a piece of original xerox art made by Masami in the mid-90s. It is limited to 200 copies.[3]
An LP called Jigokuhen will be released to celebrate the completion of the series.[4]
