Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
Weep, and you weep alone.
For this brave old earth must borrow its mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.

~ Ella Wheeler Wilcox ~

We walk in circles, so limited by our own anxieties that we can no longer distinguish between true and false, between the gangster's whim and the purest ideal. ~ Ingmar Bergman (born 14 July 1918)

Regardless of whether I believe or not, whether I am a Christian or not, I would play my part in the collective building of the cathedral. ~ Ingmar Bergman

Nobody living can ever stop me
As I go walking my freedom highway
Nobody living can make me turn back
This land is made for you and me.

~ Woody Guthrie ~ (born 14 July 1912)

The note of hope is the only note that can help us or save us from falling to the bottom of the heap of evolution, because, largely, about all a human being is, anyway, is just a hoping machine, a working machine ... don't worry — the human race will sing this way as long as there is a human to race. The human race is a pretty old place. ~ Woody Guthrie

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island,
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf stream waters,
This land was made for you and me.

Suggestions

I have always admired [Ingmar Bergman], and I wish I could be a equally good filmaker as he is, but it will never happen. His love for the cinema almost gives me a guilty conscience. ~ Steven Spielberg. Ingmar Bergman was born that day.

No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls. ~ Ingmar Bergman (date of birth)

Regardless of my own beliefs and my own doubts, which are unimportant in this connection, it is my opinion that art lost its basic creative drive the moment it was separated from worship. It severed an umbilical cord and now lives its own sterile life, generating and degenerating itself. In former days the artist remained unknown and his work was to the glory of God... The ability to create was a gift. In such a world flourished invulnerable assurance and natural humility. ~ Ingmar Bergman (date of birth)

  • 0 Jeff Q (talk) 20:01, 11 July 2006 (UTC). Humility is hardly the sole domain of the devout. Scientists, regardless of their beliefs, must grasp a greater humility — that they can never truly know the universe. True art requires inspiration, emotion, and imagination, not piety or humility. Sorry, Ingmar. (In fact, I think "invulnerable assurance" is the scariest, most dangerous attitude that exists in humankind. It shouldn't be pined for; it should be pruned away.)

I am out to sing songs that will prove to you that this is your world and that if it has hit you pretty hard and knocked you for a dozen loops, no matter what color, what size you are, how you are built, I am out to sing the songs that make you take pride in yourself and in your work. ~ Woody Guthrie (born 14 July 1912)

I have been an anarchist all my life. I hope I have remained one. I should consider it very sad indeed had I to turn to a General and rule men with a military rod. ... I believe, as I always have, in freedom. The freedom which rests on the sense of responsibility. I consider discipline indispensable, but it must be inner discipline, motivated by a common purpose and a strong feeling of comradeship. ~ Buenaventura Durruti
