The 1930 British Empire Games were the first of what later become known as the Commonwealth Games, and were held in Hamilton, in the province of Ontario in Canada from August 16-23 1930.
The events included Athletics, Boxing, Lawn Bowls, Rowing, Swimming, and Wrestling. The opening ceremonies and many events were held at the Civic Stadium (now Ivor Wynne Stadium) in east Hamilton.[1]

(*) Tom Chambers was Canadian. As one of the original team members died on the journey to Canada and the other teams agreed that Chambers could be a substitute even though he was not Scottish.
All events were for men only. In the double sculls event, only Canada was represented, so the organisers simply invited a couple of crews from the United States to provide some opposition.
