It was the 64th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1960 VFL season. The match, attended by 97,457 spectators, was won by Melbourne by a margin of 48 points, marking that club's 11th premiership victory.
This was Melbourne's seventh premiership appearance in successive seasons, having won all these contests except the 1954 VFL Grand Final and 1958 VFL Grand Final.
