• The African National Congress establish its HQ in Morogoro, Tanzania
• 8 January - Adam Faith, a British pop singer, cancels his tour of South Africa because the apartheid government prohibited mixed audiences at concerts
• 4 May - Units of the South African Defence Force are started to be issued with the R1 7.62 mm rifle licensed built in South Africa
• November - Rhodes University, Grahamstown installs a computer becoming the first university in South Africa to do so

• 1 February - David Callaghan, an all-rounder in one-day cricket matches, is born
• 2 June - Angela Thoko Didiza, politician, is born in Durban

Deaths

• 1 April - Frederick John Harris, schoolteacher, member of the African Resistance Movement and chairman of the Nonracial Olympic Committee is hanged for exploding a bomb at Park Station, Johannesburg on 24 July 1964
