The 1970s are generally remembered as a time of transition for pop and rock music. This was the decade in which music went from 1960s type of pop at the start to Disco music towards the end, which in turn was the rhythm that led the music world into the 1980s. The music of the decade was dominated by the use real instruments and even full orchestras for disco. A backlash against disco, late in 1979, drove the majority of musicians to abandon real instruments in 1980 for the use of electronic ones, such as synthesizers.

During the '70s, bands and singers also benefited from the production of 8-track, which effectively became a new source of revenue for many singers and groups worldwide during the era.

Early 70s music is often lumped in with 1960s music.
