The 1970s retro movement was a retro movement that mostly occurred during the 1990s when certain aspects of the 1970s culture were revived in mainstream American culture. However, the first stirrings of 1970s nostalgia could be seen by the late 1980s. For instance, Spy published an article called "The 1970s: A Dynamite Spy Boogie-Down Celebration of the Most Embarrassing Decade of the Twentieth Century" (December 1988).[327] It has been suggested that one of the causes of this nostalgia boom was that America had come to terms with the traumas of the 1970s, such as Watergate scandal and the Vietnam War. Surprisingly, unlike most retro movements that follow a strict Twenty Year Rule by de facto, the 1970s retro movement has yet to decline in popularity. However today it is usually overshadowed by the larger 1980s retro movement.
