The 1977 Aeroflot Ilyushin 62 airplane crash was an Ilyushin 62M aircraft operated by Aeroflot as an international scheduled passenger that crashed near Havana, Cuba on May 27, killing 68 of the 70 on-board and one person on the ground. At the time the accident was the deadliest aviation accident in Cuba's history. It remains the second deadliest in Cuba's history.

Final moments

The aircraft was flying low for its final approach. During the approach, the aircraft struck power lines, causing it to crash. Of the 70 passengers and crew on board, only two survived. There was also one fatality on the ground. One of the victims was José Carlos Schwarz, a poet and musician from Guinea-Bissau. Another was the Australian solicitor and Aboriginal Legal Service pioneer Peter Tobin.^[1] SSSR-86614 broke up on impact with the power lines. Pilot error is the cause of this crash.
