The 1978 NBA Draft was notable for the selection of Indiana State's Larry Bird. He was drafted by the Boston Celtics with a then-rule which allowed teams to draft players whose class hadn't graduated yet. Also, it marked the first time that a non-American, Mychal Thompson of The Bahamas, had been selected first overall. However, this was not as much of a landmark in the internationalization of the NBA as it may have appeared, since Thompson had spent much of his childhood in Florida, and had played U.S. college basketball.

Names in bold had been selected into All-NBA Team. Names with asterisk had been inducted into Hall of Fame.
