1E is a privately owned software company based in the United Kingdom.[1] 1E has offices in London, New York, Victoria, Cape Town, and Noida. The company develops automated software solutions to address complexity, management costs and power consumption. 1E is a green innovator and has developed a number of solutions to reduce the energy consumption of IT hardware, such as personal computers, monitors and servers.[2]

History

1E was founded in 1997 by three former Microsoft contractors, Sumir Karayi, Phil Wilcock, and Mark Blackburn, who each contributed £500 to start the company.[3][4][5] Karayi now owns most of the shares of the company after he bought out Wilcock and Blackburn.[3] Initially 1E specialized in managing Microsoft Windows software with Microsoft as their biggest customer; through this work they obtained contracts from companies like NatWest and Barclays.

The company's name is derived from a computer error. When some Microsoft Windows computers crash, a blue screen containing 1E appears.[3] This name was chosen because the founders wished that 1E could prevent this from happening to big companies.[5]

Products

1E develops six software products which run on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems:

  • NightWatchman Server is a software solution for analyzing server activity in terms of input/output and for managing server power consumption.[6]
  • NightWatchman is software designed to power down PCs in a large network where users require different settings for working hours and out-of-office hours. NightWatchman is an automated PC power management solution which helps organisations to reduce utility bills and carbon emissions within IT infrastructures.[7]
  • 1E WakeUp is scalable technology for powering on PCs remotely for successful software updating. NightWatchman and WakeUp are often sold together as a Power and Patch Management Pack.[8]
  • Nomad Enterprise enables OS releases, software applications and updates to be distributed to remote server-less branch offices and bandwidth-challenged environments.[9]
  • Shopping is a self-service software download solution for organisation staff that automates the request, approve, license and deliver cycle to help reduce operational cost and software spend.[10]

Research

In 2009 1E and the Alliance to Save Energy commissioned independent research into the awareness and behavior of PC users and server administrators in the world's largest companies.[11][12][13][14]

The PC Energy report revealed that nearly half of all corporate PCs in the US are not regularly switched off at night. This adds up to approximately 108 million work PCs being left switched on overnight costing US businesses in the region of $2.8 billion in energy costs. In terms of carbon emissions this equates to approximately 20 million tons, roughly the equivalent impact of 4 million cars.[15][16][17]

Awards

  • 1E received the Green Supplier Award at Green IT Expo 2008.[18]
  • During the CNET Networks UK Business Technology Awards in 2007, NightWatchman won the "Enterprise Software Product of the Year" award.[19]
