  • January 8 - 97th Anniversary of the ANC.

February

  • February 4 - Jacob Zuma appeared in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.[1]
  • February 4 - Jimmy Mohlala a Mbombela Local Council Municipality speaker was shot dead in his Nelspruit home.[2][3] His 19 year old son was also wounded in the attack.

He had previously been asked to resign by the African National Congress[4] following a whistle blower act which saw Municipal manager Jacob Dladla suspended.[5]

  • February 11 - Trevor Manuel releases the 2009-2010 budget.[6]
  • February 11 - For the first time in South Africa, court proceedings in a trial are conducted entirely in isiZulu in the municipality of Msinga. The proceedings are part of a pilot project to offer "access to justice for all".[7]

  • March 3 - South African holidaymakers will need visas to enter the United Kingdom.[8]
  • March 3 - Convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik has been released from jail on medical parole.[9]
  • March 4 - The 14th Dalai Lama's visa application to enter South Africa is refused.
  • March 12- The Constitutional Court ruled that registered voters living overseas can vote for the National Assembly in the April 22 elections.[10]
