Premiership season

The draw for the 2010 AFL Premiership Season is not a random selection of matches, but rather is planned by the AFL. It is intended to produce a balanced draw while also providing the fans and television networks with blockbuster games. In a competition with 16 teams and 22 rounds, it is not possible for teams to play each other twice. These factors combine to create some of the following anomalies[1]

  • six of the teams play each other for the first time in round 22;
  • of the Victorian based teams St Kilda play 6 games interstate while Essendon only need to travel 3 times;
  • of the 6 games Fremantle play in Melbourne none are at the MCG, while Geelong will play 7 games at the MCG despite not being one of the tenants at this ground;
  • North Melbourne and Port Adelaide only play two of last year's top eight teams twice, while Essendon and Collingwood play five of these teams twice.

With the introduction of two additional teams over the following two years the draw is likely to become more complicated with greater anomalies.

The times listed for each game below are the local time of the venue.

Round 1 (Season Launch)

Round 1 (Season Launch)[2]
Thursday, 25 March 7:10pm Richmond vs. Carlton MCG
Friday, 26 March 7:40pm Geelong vs. Essendon MCG
Saturday, 27 March 2:10pm Melbourne vs. Hawthorn MCG
Saturday, 27 March 7:10pm Brisbane Lions vs. West Coast Gabba
Saturday, 27 March 7:10pm Sydney vs. St Kilda ANZ Stadium

Sunday, 28 March 5:10pm Fremantle vs. Adelaide Subiaco Oval
Sunday, 28 March 2:10pm Western Bulldogs vs. Collingwood Etihad Stadium
  • Richmond v Carlton will play the season opening match on the Thursday Night of Round 1 for the third consecutive year. It is also the fourth consecutive year the sides have played each other in the opening round.
  • AFL Premiers Geelong will start their title defence against Essendon. This was an abandonment of the AFL's policy for the previous three seasons, where the grand finalists would meet again in round 1. It would also be the first time since 2006 that Essendon would have to play a defending premier in the first round, and also with a new captain.
  • If he plays, Western Bulldogs v Collingwood will be Brad Johnson's 350th match.
  • For the third year in succession St Kilda and Sydney will clash in the opening round as well as the Brisbane Lions and West Coast.

  • In a first for the league, the final round of the season was given a floating schedule, with the AFL to allocate the timeslots for the games six weeks out from the end of the season, in order to reduce the likelihood of a team playing the first week of the finals after a Sunday game in Round 22.[3]

Awards

AFL Rising Star

The AFL Rising Star is awarded to the best player who, as of the beginning of the season, is under the age of 21 and has played fewer than 10 games. Each week one player is nominated and at the end of the season a selection panel votes to select the overall winner.

Goal of the Year

The Australian Football League celebrates the best goal of the season through the annual Goal of the Year competition. From 2009 onwards, the commercial name for the award is the AFL Stores Goal of the Year.

Mark of the Year

The Australian Football League celebrates the best mark of the season through the annual Mark of the Year competition. From 2009 onwards, the commercial name for the award is the Hungry Jacks Mark of the Year.

AFL Army Award

The Australian Football League, with the support of the Australian Army, recognises players who produce act(s) of bravery or selflessness to promote the cause of his team during a game. Each week three players and what they did are made available on the AFL Army Award website for supporters to vote on. The player with the highest percentage of the vote is the AFL Army Award nominee for that round.
