Premiership season
The draw for the 2010 AFL Premiership Season is not a random selection of matches, but rather is planned by the AFL. It is intended to produce a balanced draw while also providing the fans and television networks with blockbuster games. In a competition with 16 teams and 22 rounds, it is not possible for teams to play each other twice. These factors combine to create some of the following anomalies[1]
- six of the teams play each other for the first time in round 22;
- of the Victorian based teams St Kilda play 6 games interstate while Essendon only need to travel 3 times;
- of the 6 games Fremantle play in Melbourne none are at the MCG, while Geelong will play 7 games at the MCG despite not being one of the tenants at this ground;
- North Melbourne and Port Adelaide only play two of last year's top eight teams twice, while Essendon and Collingwood play five of these teams twice.
With the introduction of two additional teams over the following two years the draw is likely to become more complicated with greater anomalies.
The times listed for each game below are the local time of the venue.

- Richmond v Carlton will play the season opening match on the Thursday Night of Round 1 for the third consecutive year. It is also the fourth consecutive year the sides have played each other in the opening round.
- AFL Premiers Geelong will start their title defence against Essendon. This was an abandonment of the AFL's policy for the previous three seasons, where the grand finalists would meet again in round 1. It would also be the first time since 2006 that Essendon would have to play a defending premier in the first round, and also with a new captain.
- If he plays, Western Bulldogs v Collingwood will be Brad Johnson's 350th match.
- For the third year in succession St Kilda and Sydney will clash in the opening round as well as the Brisbane Lions and West Coast.
