The 2016 Winter Youth Olympics (officially known as II Winter Youth Olympic Games) is a major international sports and cultural festival to be celebrated in the tradition of the Youth Olympic Games in the Winter of 2016 during the XXXI Olympiad.
The city which will host the Games will be elected by the IOC in 2012.

In January 2009, Focus News Agency reported that Sofia wanted to bid for the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games.[1]
Sofia previously bid entered a bid for the 1992, 1994, and 2014 Winter Olympics, but did not gain a place on the shortlist on the latest edition of the Games for which they bid.
Located in central Switzerland, Lucerne has previously hosted the 1962, 1974, 1982 and 2001 World Rowing Championships, and there is a growing movement in support of a Lucerne bid for the hosting of the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics. [2]
IOC president Jacques Rogge has suggested that the small upstate New York town, which previously hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980, place a bid for the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics.[3]
Zaragoza and Jaca are considering a joint bid to host the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics. Jaca previously bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics, yet failed.[4] However, there were also talks of a bid from the two localities, or indeed one or the other sperately, for the 2018 Winter Olympics.
