Potential bids

Africa

During the 2008 Summer Olympics, Kenyan Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka announced Kenya is considering a bid for the 2028 Games. It would dovetail with "Vision 2030" when Kenya expects to have the status of a developed nation.[1][2][3]

Europe

In 2005, the Dutch sporting confederation NOC*NSF began considering a submission to bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic games in the capital of the Netherlands. On November 12, 2007, Minister of Economic Affairs Maria van der Hoeven launched an investigation into the possibility of a Dutch bid.[4] The 2028 Summer Olympics will come 100 years after the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, the only Games held in the Netherlands thus far, and they would like to mark the centennial.[5] Amsterdam previously bid for the 1992 Summer Olympics.[6] The proposed new, large football stadium in Rotterdam, which is part of the Dutch bid for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, would also make the Netherlands' second city a possible candidate for the 2028 Summer Olympics, according to Harry Been.[7] Crown Prince Willem-Alexander reconfirmed the nation's interest at the 2008 Summer Olympics.[8]

North America

A joint bid for Vancouver and Seattle to host the 2028 Summer Olympics is being explored. Unless a proposed Montreal/Lake Placid/Albany bid occurs for the 2022 Winter Olympics, or a proposed Oresund Region, Copenhagen/Malmo bid occurs for the 2024 Summer Olympics this would be the first multi-national bid submitted; and, if Montreal/Lake Placid is not chosen and Munich, Germany is not chosen to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, it would also be the first time that a city will have hosted both a Summer and a Winter Games as Vancouver hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics. A multi-national bid would be a ground breaking event in the Olympic movement and would require overcoming numerous logistical hurdles and a change in an International Olympic Committee rule requiring that the Olympics be awarded to a single city. This rule has often not been enforced, with cities bidding and winning Olympics where some of the events are held away from the host city. For example, in the 2008 Games hosted in Beijing, equestrian events were actually held in Hong Kong, 1,200 miles (1,931 km) south of Beijing;[9] in the 1956 Summer Games Melbourne,Australia had equestrian events in Stockholm,Sweden 15590 km away and in the 2010 games being hosted in Vancouver, numerous events are being hosted by Whistler, British Columbia, a town approximately 100 km away. Vancouver and Seattle both believe that the logistics can be overcome and have cited that the travel time between Seattle and Vancouver is similar to the travel time between Whistler, British Columbia and Vancouver, the site of most of the 2010 Winter Olympics competitions.[10][11]

Oceania

Brisbane has been pre-selected by the Australian Olympic Committee as the next most likely Australian bid city.[12] In August 2008, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh stated that she believed that an Olympics bid in the 15 to 20 year time frame would be likely. Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman also stated that infrastructure to support an Olympic Games could be in place for a bid within 15 to 20 years.[13][14]
Melbourne is considering a bid for either the 2024 or 2028 Summer Olympics. The only major venue that would need to be constructed would be a rowing and canoeing course. The city hosted the 1956 Summer Olympics and the 2006 Commonwealth Games.[15]

Trademark controversy

Anticipating bids for the Summer Olympics by Paris, France, in 2005 a Parisian, Mr Gilbert L., registered the trademarks of "Paris 2016", "Paris 2020", "Paris 2024" and "Paris 2028" and associated internet domain names. On March 14, 2007 the High Court of First Instance of Paris (Tribunal d'instance of Paris) ruled that the registration of the domain names was fraudulent and annulled the trademarks.[16]
