209radio, is a local Community Radio station based in
Cambridge,
UK, which was awarded a
Community Radio Licence by
Ofcom in April 2006.
209radio is planning to launch its FM Transmission in July 2007.
209radio is currently available, 24 Hours a Day to listen to over the internet.
About 209radio
209radio exists to provide training and support for those who live, work and/or study in the Cambridge city area; enabling them to make radio programming relevant to themselves and their communities.
209radio is a
non-profit social enterprise owned and operated by Cambridge residents.
This volunteer driven radio station is a member of the
Community Media Association (CMA) and the
National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NVCO).
Station History
2003:The project began in March
2003 in the home of founders Karl Hartland and Lucy Clifton as a
webcast promotion vehicle for
electronic music but grew due to increasing interest from others in Cambridge who either saw the potential of
grassroots broadcasting or who were involved in previous Community Media projects in the city.
2004:Following publication of the Community Radio Order 2004 by the
DCMS alongside UK communications regulator
Ofcom, the group took the decision to apply for an
FM band Community Radio licence in November
2004.
2006:209radio ran an Restricted Service Licence Station in Cambridge in February
2006.
The station moved from its original premises in April 2006 (209 being the house number of these premises) into vacated Star Radio studios in the newly named, Citylife House on Sturton Street.
The station was awarded a Community FM Radio Licence by OFCOM in April
2006.
2007:A vote to change the name of the station was voted for at the yearly AGM meeting in January 2007.
The decision, from the vote was to keep the station's current name, 209radio.
209radio currently plans to launch FM transmission to Cambridge in July of
2007.
