The term Two Dimensional or 2D means having two dimensions, in the case of a video game height and width. Short of displaying an incomprehensible pixel-wide line, this is the simplest form of video game graphics. Games started with two dimensional graphics, from Pong units to Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES. Since the advancement into 3D graphics, games with 2D graphcis have become increasingly rare, though not totally extinct. They are still prominent in handheld systems as well as mobile games.

2D or Two Dimensional uses two measurements of an object: width and length, like a square. Two dimensional objects do not have depth, like a cube. It's a mathematics tool, but it's also used in video games, and computer science.
Throughout maths, it is used in geometry and other categories.
In video games, it is used as a perspective, like in Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2.
