3516 is a
punk house located in
Jamaica
Plain, a neighborhood in
Boston, MA, founded by some of the former
occupants of
The Glass House. Also known as
Hutch & Matty's Basement, the house has acted
as a music venue, crash pad and neighborhood hangout for the better
part of 4 years.
3516 is a notable example of a well run
underground venue. Though operation on the boarder of legality, it
managed to go its entire run without intervention of law
enforcement. Incidents were kept to a almost non-existent minimum
until the last two party's. Many up and coming bands have gotten
their start in the basement, and many seasoned veterans and local
legends have graced the stage there as well. Several record
releases also occurred there. Notable examples are listed
below.
Until recently, 3516 hosted shows on the average of twice
a month. While these shows were technically open to the public,
they are not advertised, and one must be "
in the know" to
find it's location.
History
Though shows officially
started during April of 2004, the house had already been occupied
by Matty for the prior year. During this year Hutch had been
studying under the nigh infamous Twitch (
TwitchDestroyer) at
74 Broadway in Haverhill. That spring, the 2nd floor of 3516 had
become vacant, and some of the tenants of the first floor had
decided to expand into the much larger apartment above. Matty
however had decided to retain his room. To this day we're not sure
if this was laziness, or incredible foresight into the chaos that
would commence soon enough. Seizing this opportunity, Hutch
immediately moved into the empty room of the two bedroom apartment.
The occupancy dwindling from four roommates to two, provided much
more ample room for debauchery. The basement had the perfect
layout. The ceilings weren't too low. The obstructions were sparse.
The corner lent itself to a stage area. The lighting... merely
sufficient. This was easily rectified with $5 spot lights from home
depot. The corner of the kitchen was perfect for a keg. The windows
provided cross ventilation to keep the smoke ventilating. The
porch... well that was a death trap for those too cool to see the
bands.
The first season began sans stage. Though and area was
definitively set aside for bands to play, the stage was not built
until later. The decision was fairly easy. the impossibility to
keep the amps stable during shows, due to the rough floor, demanded
its construction. After a series of amusing incidents, including
car keys lost down the sewer, construction began in late july of
'04.
And in sept '06 all welcomed Blake into the house. Who
didn't have enough punk rock points to enter his own kitchen
:)
