The 3rd Regiment, West Virginia Volunteer Infantry
was a Union regiment in the American Civil War, raised as Third
Virginia Infantry in June 1861
and serving until May 1863,
when the regiment was mounted and became known as Third Virginia
Infantry Mounted. After West Virginia became a state, the regiment
was retitled as Third West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. Several
months later in January 1864
the designation was again changed, this time to Sixth West Virginia
Cavalry. It continued to serve in Kansas and Nebraska after the end
of the war as Sixth West Virginia Veterans Volunteer Cavalry and
was disbanded on 22 May1866 in Fort
Leavenworth.
