4 color rebellion is a multi-author video gaming blog founded in December 2004 that focuses primarily on Nintendo video games and systems, with occasional coverage regarding independent video games, comic books, and movies. Articles published on the site are featured on UK-based News Portal, News Now. The editorial team used to publish a video game podcast named "4CR Podcast" weekly, which is currently on an indefinite hiatus. Also published is the fan-based "4CR Forumites Podcast", a podcast arranged and created by members of the 4cr forums. 4 color rebellion is often abbreviated as '4cr'.

History

Site Design

All headers 4cr has had, in descending order.

4colorrebellion.com initially launched in September 2004 as a comic book website
<ref> </ref>, but converted to its current state on December 2, 2004. Since then, 4cr has gone through two additional design overhauls – the first of which had a header featuring a pet iguana, named Yoshi, and a small toy figurine of the Legend of Zelda series character "Link". The next redesign occurred on December 1, 2005 when 4cr staff posted a fake press release that claimed 4CR had been acquired by CNet as a farce, while the newer design was uploaded. This current look has a hand-drawn banner and image links to the last four featured stories posted at the top of the page. A column titled "News Get" was also added later, which features a constantly updated list of links with a single, carefully worded description for each. "News Get" was created as a means in which to integrate RSS more completely with the website's backbone.

Nintendo 21

Often considered 4cr's first claim to fame, this post contained a fabricated diagram of controlling schemes for what would later become the Nintendo Wii, before the Wii's controller had been unveiled. Other gaming news websites, such as Gamespot and IGN, began to report the rumor as news. The post said, "Supposedly someone in Japan saw a copy of Nintendo’s documents for their shareholder meeting. In this document it talked about the Revolution, or according to this, the ‘Nintendo 21.’" and followed with its "insider information". This post, which Gamespot and IGN linked too, brought many new readers and permanently increased 4cr's popularity.

Name Origin

With its roots as a comic book website, "4 Color" was in reference to the 4 colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black) used in the printing process. When the site changed its focus to video game news and blogging, it was sometimes mistaken that the "4 Color" referenced the 4 colors of the Super Nintendo console's controller.

Podcast

The podcast started around Fall 2005 after it was suggested in the weekly Reader's Mailbag and first aired on September 5, 2005, Nick Luckett introduced the podcast as a compilation of the news of the week and a couple of introductions to the website and their trivia section.

As more podcasts were released, 4 color rebellion also added further sections, including a roundtable discussing a certain topic; 'Rebel In Japan', a report from Vinnk, the 4cr correspondent from Japan; and 'The Lightbox', a segment from Nick Luckett himself about comic books.

Three 'Forumite Podcasts' were also released by 4 color rebellion fans from the 4cr Forums ([108]), organized by forumite Sideath, with the exception of the third Forumite Podcast, which was organized by arcanistherogue and included in the TGS 2006 podcast. These podcasts featured roundtables and other special features.

  • Event coverage

4cr staff members attended the now defunct E3 in 2005 and 2006, providing coverage of the Nintendo keynotes and impressions about games on the show floor. 4cr rebels Jools and Vinnk went to the Tokyo Game Show in 2006, making a series of posts and a short podcast about the show.

    Trivia

  • The "BROOOOOM" meme in the 4cr forums started in May 2006. A new member, Broom, created an introduction thread, because there was (and still is) no official "I'm new" thread. Most of the members greeted him, including Rebellionaire, Vinnk, and awaited his reply. After a few days, many of the members questioned his return. Vinnk cried "BROOOOOOOM!", in the style of Metal Gear Solid, in order to call him back. Many of the members thought this was funny, and copied him. Every new member who joined thereafter was initiated with the calling of "BROOOOOOOM!" On September 25, 2006, Broom returned, unaware of his overnight fame, he created another "I'm new" thread. Despite his return, the meme lives on.
  • Three of 4cr's administrators (Edgar, Kevin and Mathieu) lived together as roommates before joining the website as staff members.
