This article is about memes, or cliches on the 4chan[1317] imageboard community.
It is not so much a listing of jokes that started on 4chan, but more a directory of common memes used in daily use. The purpose of this article is not to condone or approve of any retarded habits pertaining to 4chan users. Rather, it had been compiled in the interest of reducing the lurking time for new members, and hopefully the use for forceful "lurk more!!!" outbursts

Be warned that the following images contain questionable subject matter, including pornography, racist propoganda and possibly sacrelige. Please be advised before reading further.

    The List

    animated

A joke -- can be used (by the unaware) to indicate that their post contains an animated GIF, since 4chan thumbnails all submitted images and shows no indication if they are indeed animated.
Most likely, it is a satirical response to someone including a still-image GIF, which is less efficient than the JPEG format. This was more of a problem when dialup internet services were the standard, meaning a substantial difference in load times, but this is not usually an issue at the current time. Rather, it is a branch of elitism.

    Bix Nood

A rare example of a "forced" meme, the phrase came in response to a racist cartoon posted from the White Aryan Resistance[1318] (Warning: racist site) homepage.
The obvious insinuation is that young, black males do not speak intelligbly except when using profanities. It is generally not used as an image macro, but instead as a tagline to (or in response of) images of tribal Africans or natives.

Forced memes are made by repeatedly flooding a joke and/or variation on it in the hopes that:
  • a) Newer users will assume it is a meme and join in. (The avalanche effect)
  • b) Older users will get annoyed and surf somewhere else, meaning the flooder has "won".
  • c) The joke is genuinely funny (as in this case) and it simply needs to be hammered into prominence to overcome the "crabs-in-a-bucket-syndrome" inherent in online communities as a quality control measure.

    Cats/Caturday

A strong affinity for cats exists on 4chan.
Saturday is considered christened "Caturday" by fans of adorable feline images, much like its counterparts Furry Friday (for anthropomorphic hentai), Scaturday (for scatological pornography, and Bunday (for cute bunny images).

As in the lack of overt profanation towards Jesus, kittens enjoy a protection by the website's members against anti-cat trolls.
Posting from a series of images called "torturecat" can result in wide villification, though most revolve around cats' specific idiosyncrasies such as grooming, sleeping, or attacking. A large number of contributions are original content -- often the poster's own cats put into humorous, mildly uncomfortable (though rarely cruel) situations.

    Cracky-Chan

A former visitor of 4chan, she has developed a cult following even in her absence and is either adored or despised by members. The administration has warranted her a popular enough subject to cross-wordfilter a variety of rhymes in substitution (facky, jacky, condracky, dappy, iraqi, blacky, cocky, hacky, snacky). She is presumed to hail from England, given both a questionable lack of dental care as well as several photographs from her home that display british-style power outlets. It is generally agreed that her first name is "Freida." In her early days, she sported a pair of black fox cosplay ears and red paint or makeup on her cheeks and nose. It was not, as some suggested, a skin condition such as eczema.

The title "camwhore" is frquently applied to Cracky, although this is not entirely accurate.
She isn't beleived to have posted any topless pictures while visiting the site, although some did later surface on her Livejournal webpage. As details about Cracky-chan are ambigious, and she is most likely under the legal age of consent, seeking out or posting such images would not be a Good Idea. There is, however, some fanart of her floating around, including a few classified as hentai.

Her livejournal site revealed a wealth of new information of Cracky that was unknown in her 4chan days -- mainly that she practices self-harm by cutting and has developed an eerily comfortable relationship with her own menstrual blood.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to come across new information, as each discovery of a new Livejournal endeavor is rapidly proceeded by a board invasion from 4chan and subsequent deletion by Cracky.

    fgsfds

An image macro, it is always in lowercase.
The above man is the host of the Harald Schmidt Show in Germany, and his nonsensical caption is pronounced "figgis-fiddis" (or simply "eff-gee-ess-eff-dee-ess"). It is used to explain frustration in understanding a previous post, or to suggest that said poster was being purposefully vague and confusing. The text is frequently applied to old, white-haired men such as Pope Benedict and Dumbledore.

    Happy Negro

    <No picture available>

    A one-time star in a Bang Bus[1319] (
    warning: pornographic site
) video, Santino Lee provides a number of goofy-looking faces during his performance representative of how black people were displayed with comical expressions in advertising during the late 19th and early 20th century. The usage of "negro" rather than "nigger" in this case, which gives the term a slightly-less racist overture, suggests that the cliche is pitying Mr. Lee as being helpless to his culture rather than solely poking fun at him.

    It's a trap!

Originally from Fark[1320], this Star Wars quote relates how Admiral Ackbar, the leader of the Rebel Alliance, talks only of retreat from the moment their final battle with the Galactic Empire begins.

The image macro is most often used on pictures of cute kittens caught in problematic situations (usually orchestrated by their masters) such as dryers, boxes, or drop-ceilings.
It can also be appended to pornographic threads in which a user questions the subject's legal age.

It is popular to induce a play on the words, such as "It's a tarp!"
(with a picture of a tarpaulin) or the "trap" being a plumbing system's stink-trap.
Jesus, lol

A series of captions in historical paintings of Jesus Christ that have Him answering a question in a humorously way, always ending with a comma and the term lol.
It may possibly have been derived from a response the "how do I shot web" meme.

Example -- Jesus holding a child
  • Man: "Hey Jesus, is that baby for sale?
  • Jesus: "It is now, lol"

  • In addition, usually none of the image macros are sacreligious or tawdry, instead relying of the harmless anachronism of Jesus using internet-speak without any additonal embellishments.
This is a curious phenomenon, especially given 4chan's relative "anything goes" mentality. As the website's demography is mostly young, white, American males who were probably brought up Christian -- even if they no longer practice the faith -- it has been speculated that a subconscious respect for Christ has protected Him from being the victim of more distasteful photoshops.
Kill it with fire

A call for action, can mean mean several things:
  • That the user, or a moderator should delete the image, likely having violated the site rules or United States law.

  • That the image represents some person or thing that is gross or miserable, and said poster is indicating what should be done to the subject.

  •
One does not simply walk into Mordor...

One does not simply TACTICAL STEALTH ACTION into Mordor.
    (from Metal Gear Solid)

An endearment of Boromir (Sean Bean's) ominous line from the Council of Elrond scene in the 2002 film The Lord of the Rings.
The word walk is usually modified in some way anarchonistic to Middle Earth, such as "drive into Mordor" or "beam down into Mordor".

On 4chan, the term "Mordor" has been wordfiltered to "a huge, gaping vagina the size of a hallway."
This is because the fictional land is surrounded by mountain ranges on three sides, but is completely open on the fourth, leaving a large hole. This has spawned a twin-meme where the joke on is the wordfilter -- such as images of a woman's vagina or other sizeable orifice and the original half of the phrase.
torrent plz

A request to obtain a copy of something the previous poster has admitted to possesing via leetspeak.
It is not always limited to a torrent file, but can be asking for any type of multimedia file. The cute tone of the phrase is generally more successful than polite asking, as it supposedly demonstrates you are using the "proper" form for request and not a newbie.
Xbox is hueg

Always spelled "hueg" and not "huge" (a form of leetspeak), this meme exaggerates the size of an Xbox video game console, which is larger than its competitors -- Sony's Playstation 2 and Nintendo's Gamecube.
It is unusual in that the cliche is more often triggered by another and not posted via itself. For example, a picture of anything of immense size (even something several times larger than an xbox) is sometimes followed by the comment "Not as hueg as xbox, lol."

Series of these images take a predicatable course along the line of an ever-increasing one-upmanship.
The first, say, will be an xbox crushing a person. The next, an xbox colliding with the earth's atmosphere and emitting a shockwave. The largest hyperbole in common use is placing it at the end of a comparison chart for heavenly bodies, revealing that the mere controller itself is several times larger than the Sun.
