The number of TechCrunch Subscribers
53,651 was the number of subscribers to
TechCrunch, a
popular
weblog covering
Web 2.0 startups and new products, in May,
2006.
It became a popular
Internet meme among
venture
capitalists and
entrepreneurs after investor
Josh Kopelman, the
managing director of First Round Capital, noted that “Too many
companies are targeting an audience of 53,651.”
Kopelman wrote
this in a post to his weblog on May 11, 2006:
Redeye VC: 53,651.
His observation was aimed at startup companies in
Silicon Valley that
develop consumer-facing Internet applications and concisely capped
a prevailing sentiment that investor enthusiasm for the space was
misplaced.
Kopelman’s observation came as many Internet industry
watchers were starting to question the underlying economic
stability of the new generation of consumer Internet
applications.
But it must be said that there are many more
people than 53,651 TechCrunch Subscribers who are interested in Web
2.0 (i.e., users of GMail, Google Maps, Flickr, Friendchip and many
more).
