55 Bar is a jazz club started in New York City located at 55 Christopher Street.

History

The 55 Bar has been around since 1919. It was originally a speakeasy during Prohibition.

On November 3, 1971, jazz composer Gary McFarland was poisoned by a drink spiked with methadone at the 55 Bar.

55 Bar is a jazz club in Greenwich Village, New York City (Manhattan). Founded and in continuous operation since 1918, the club started with a walk-in jam session in the 1980s and switched to an all-jazz format when Ms. Queva Lutz took the room over in 2001.

A funky dive bar from prohibition days, the 55's heart is jazz and its soul is the blues. Incredible musicians rock the house nightly with some of the most innovative playing in NYC.
