64 Zoo Lane is a children's television programme (show) created by An Vrombaut. It features a 9 year-old girl named Lucy who lives at 64 Zoo Lane, next door to a Zoo. Every night she is told a story by the animals present there. Characters include Georgina the Giraffe, Nelson the Elephant, Tickles and Giggles the Monkeys, and Molly the Hippopotamus. The programme (show) emphasises friendship and responsibility. After the story ends Lucy is normally asleep (certain episodes have her yawning then sleeping in bed, when she's asleep by the end of the normal episodes, she was lulled to sleep by the story), and Georgina puts her in bed. There are many opportunities for learning: exploring language and vocabulary are enhanced by the use of intonation and expression in the character's voices and the themes of the animals' stories support social and emotional issues, including friendships and helping and caring for others..[1]
In the United Kingdom 64 Zoo Lane is shown on CBeebies, often as part of the lineup of the Bedtime Hour, and on Playhouse Disney. In the United States 64 Zoo Lane airs on Nick Jr.
In the U.S. version, Lucy's voice is given an American makeover, but the voices of the animals and the theme song remain with British accents. The British version features the voice of Alice Hearing as Lucy.
There is also a Scottish Gaelic version of 64 Zoo Lane, Rathad an Sutha, shown in Scotland on BBC Two Scotland. The Theme song is sung in Gaelic. It is produced by BBC Alba.
The creator of the TV series, An Vrombaut, also wrote and illustrated six 64 Zoo Lane picture books, based on stories from the TV series.
