The 66th Academy Awards were presented March 21, 1994 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles. The show was landmark in that it featured a female African American host for the first time, Whoopi Goldberg, and represented a direct contrast in edgy style from Billy Crystal who had hosted the show the previous four years.
This show also featured the first Oscar performances by Janet Jackson, Neil Young, and Bruce Springsteen, who won the best song award for "Streets of Philadelphia."
Schindler's List dominated the evening winning seven Oscars out of its nine nominations, including Best Picture.
Another big winner was The Piano, which received eight nominations and won three awards. Anna Paquin's win, at age 11, made her the second youngest winner in Oscar history, the youngest being Tatum O'Neal, who won the award at age 10.
Jane Campion became only the second woman in history to be nominated for Best Director. Although she did not win, she received the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. This would later be duplicated in 2004 by Sofia Coppola.
"Welcome to Oscar 66. So they went out and gave me a live microphone for three hours. There haven't been this many showbiz executives so nervous and sweating over one woman since Heidi Fleiss."--Whoopi Goldberg in her opening monologue.
"The movies this year covered oppression, abuse, revolution, people being wrongfully accused, people being tortured, people fleeing for their lives and that was just "What's Love Got to Do With It"--Goldberg.
"The only thing a man can say at a time like this is I'm not really bald, I'm lucky enough to be working."---A shaven Tommy Lee Jones, accepting his Best Supporting Actor award.
"I've never been so frightened in all my life."---Deborah Kerr, upon receiving an Honorary Oscar.
"When I open this envelope, four gifted nominees will engage their considerable talents to convince us they're happy a fifth nominee is taking home the Oscar."---Gene Hackman, presenting the Best Supporting Actress award.
"I would like to believe in God in order to thank Him. But I just believe in Billy Wilder, so, thank you, Mr. Wilder."---Fernando Trueba, accepting the Foreign Language Film award.
"During the course of the evening you have heard the five nominees for Original Song. To refresh your memories, I offered to sing them all again."---Whitney Houston, presenting the Best Original Song award.
"This is the first song I ever wrote for a motion picture so I guess it's all downhill from here."---Bruce Springsteen, upon winning Best Original Song.
"This is the best drink of water after the longest drought of my life."---Steven Spielberg, upon winning Best Picture. Spielberg had already won Best Director earlier in the evening.
"Well, that's Oscar 66, baby. I want to say good night to everyone here, and I want to say good night to my friends in Tucson who are waiting with my 7 a.m. call ..... but I especially want to say good night to that little kid who's sitting out there at home, saying: 'One day, one of those will be mine.' Kid, you better believe it. Good night."---Goldberg closing the show.
