History

The route was altered in 1995 on the completion of the Black Country Spine Road. It was swallowed up into the A41 at Great Bridge and re-emerged 1.3 miles (2.1 km) north at Wednesbury before continuing the remainder of the route unchanged. The "old" section of the A461 became part of the B4517 and the A4037, while a section of it became unclassified.
