The AADL GT is a
product of the Ann Arbor District Library. The GT (Game
Tournmanets) are a series of video game tournaments culminating
with a grand championship event in December. The events usually
draw between 75 and 100 competitors but more than 150 different
people competed in season three, and there is also a dedicated
staff that runs the event. The siblings and parents of the
competitors also attend just to watch their family member compete
The AADL-GT takes place in the multipurpose room of the main branch
of the Ann Arbor District Library. This event is sometimes carried
by Ann Arbor's local Community Television Network (CTN). The
commentary is provided by a variety of current and former
participants such as TC Bad Driver, Evil Bus Driver, Sir Ducksalot,
Major Tom and of course, Eli himself.
History
First
Season
During the first season,
Mario
Kart: Double Dash was the only game played. The season
consisted of four monthly tournaments,
starting in August and a
grand championship event in December. The monthly tournaments
consisted of a single player race event,
single player battle
event, and co-op race event, which were used as qualifiers for a
final battle event for prizes. The grands
consisted of a wild
card event then a single player racing event as a qualifier. The
elimination rounds were single player battle
events. The final
battle was between John Durski (4th place), D-Rex (3rd place), and
then there was a controversial finish between
Duck (2nd) and
TurtlePerson2 (1st). Although the two were tied, Duck eliminated
[himself in order to win the second place prize.
Second
Season
The second season added
Super Smash Brothers Melee to the
mix. The season also added a pre-season event in July. Clans were
also
implemented. A controversial addition was the "surprise
round", which was the prize round. Players complained that the
surprise
round favored players who spent more money on video
games, while advocates said that a surprise game required more
gaming skill and
less practice.
The grand championships of the
second season were in a similar format to the season tournaments.
The surprise round games were
Root Beer Tapper and Pong. The
finals consisted of Duck (1st), Jerry (2nd), Monkeyman (3rd), and
Leinad (4th). TurtlePerson2 did
not attend the
tournament.
Third Season
The third season removed the
surprise round and instead implemented a system, which awarded
prizes per event instead of large
prizes at the end. The season
has been dominated by players such as TurtlePerson2, shin
Oroachimaru, Mike S.(Mike Swain), Pwnerer, and Bad
Driver
(TurtlePerson2's brother). The clan battle has been dominated by We
Are Hard, Bros and Co, and Turtle Clan. The grand championship is
on December 16, 2006.
Prizes
The first season had prizes
for 1st through 3rd place of $70, $50, $30 respectively. The grand
championship had, as prizes, an
iPod, a
Nintendo DS, and a
GBA SP.
The second season had the same prizes for
the regular season, but added a
PSP to the grand championship prizes.
The third
season had four events, each giving out 1st-3rd prizes of $40, $30,
and $20. The grand championship is expected to feature a
Nintendo Wii
as well as an iPod. Rumor has it that the members of the top clan
will recieve Nintendo DS's. The other prizes are unknown.
Trivia
Joe Smolarski, a feared player during the first and
second season, has not been to any of season 3.
A similar thing
happened to Pro, who was in 1st place at the end of season 2, but
never came back for season 3. He was in the same clan as Joe
Smolarski.
The tournaments are run by Eli Neighburger, who along
with others at the library have developed multiple applications
used in running the tournaments.
Skills Dat Kills won the clan
battle season 2, but merged with Noise Machine to form Bros and
Co.
Mike Beech (Evil Bus Driver), a co-founder of the name
Vaccinated Monks and former captain of The Reds, gains his
popularity by wearing a collection of costumes to the AADL_GT
events. Joining during the 2nd season, he wore
Imperial
Stormtrooper armor. During the 3rd season, he wore a suit and a
Top Hat (he didn't have
a name for it but was hassled by being called
Willy Wonka.)
Two of We
Are Hard's premier clan members (Shin Orachimaru and Omega,
affectionately known as the Royster brothers) make a two hour trip
every month to go to the tournament, they come all the way from
Kalamazoo.
