An AB as prepared by the Blue and
White Cafe in North Adelaide
The
AB is a type of
fast food from
Adelaide which has been popular with university
students since its creation. It is made up of chips and
yiros meat, covered with
tomato, barbecue, garlic sauce and
tzatziki. Its somewhat grotesque appearance is the
source of the name "AB", for "
abortion", or "
after-birth" (it has also been known to be
called a
Dogs Breakfast in some other places in
Adelaide). It is commonly eaten after or during a night of
drinking, or as a hangover food. While
$9 is the normal
price for an AB, it is merely the minimum possible size: there are
currently records in excess of $350-worth ABs being served and
consumed.
Rivalry
Only two
North Adelaide take-out
cafés currently serve the AB; the North Adelaide Burger Bar
(commonly called the
Red and White) and the
Blue and
White, which are both on
O'Connell Street within
three storefronts of each other. Both claim to be the inventor of
the AB, and both claim to make a superior AB to the other. The main
difference is that the Red and White's AB includes
tzatziki sauce whilst the Blue and
White's does not.
Due to an inter-college rivalry between
St. Mark's, who
usually patronise the
Red and White, and the other major
North Adelaide residential colleges (
St. Ann's,
Lincoln and
Aquinas), residents of those
colleges tend to favour the
Blue and White.
Numerous
other takeaway shops in the Adelaide area have also started selling
the AB's, although they appear under different guises. The 'Atomic
Bomb' is available from the Fish And Chip shop on Marion Road next
to the Tram line with a smallest serving size of $7.
Trivia
In 2005 the band 'Fix My Chariot' (from St Mark's College)
won a $200 AB from the Blue and White Cafe in the inaugural
Inter-College Battle of the Bands held by Lincoln College.
This AB was consumed with gusto by St Mark's Collegians,
notwithstanding their loyalty to the Red and White.
