AEBN was formed in 1999.[1] At the time, video-streaming technology was still in its infancy, but the founders of AEBN immediately recognized the impact this technology could have on customers looking for a discreet way to purchase adult content.[1] In the weeks and months that followed, AEBN developed and launched a unique adult Video-On-Demand service that revolutionized content delivery for the adult industry.[2] AEBN's pay-per-minute model became the blueprint for online pornography, one that is still used today.
Headquartered in Charlotte, NC, AEBN provides its VOD services to over ten million subscribers worldwide. AEBN.net averages over 150 million unique visitors each month, and reaches approximately 4% of the world’s population every day. It is also home to the world’s largest adult library, housing over 100,000 adult titles from over 1,500 studios.[3]
In addition to its industry connections, AEBN has ventured into genres previously recognized as exclusively mainstream.
AEBN announced in late 2008 that it would be debuting a new product called RealTouch in early 2009. Touted as the greatest breakthrough in sex technology, RealTouch is said to combine the latest advances in hi-tech ingenuity to create the next generation of adult entertainment.[4] Representatives for the company demonstrated the device at the 2009 AVN Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas, where it gained widespread media attention.[5][6][7]
AEBN and NakedSword, one of the largest gay internet pornography companies on the web, announced their merger in January 2007. The merger gave AEBN a windfall of gay content from well-known studios such as COLT and Falcon, as well as a strong brand name in the gay market.[8] NakedSword retains its separate headquarters in San Francisco, California, giving AEBN offices on both the east and west coasts.
In 2009, AEBN merged with another gay adult company, Raging Stallion Studios and its sister-label, Pistol Media. The merger also included Pistol Media's Gunzblazing affiliate program. Raging Stallion Studios is also based in San Francisco, California, and is one of the world's largest producers of gay adult films.[9]
Early in 2006, AEBN started xPeeps.com, an x-rated social networking site in the style of MySpace that allowed users much of the same functionality. It grew rapidly, with a membership of over 300,000 in the first eight months.[10]
Then, in 2007, AEBN created another social networking site, this one similar to xPeeps, but specifically for the fetish community. The site was called SocialKink.com, and its existence was announced in September 2007.[11] Among offering the same features as other social networking sites, SocialKink includes a wiki-based "kinktionary" of fetishes.
Another AEBN project, one which gained media attention was Xobile, which launched in April 2005. It was a product that made adult material available on mobile devices and representatives from the company were on several television news programs, including 'Live and Direct' with Rita Crosby.[12] Xobile was known for its "PornMyPortable" campaign that offered adult material specifically made to work with mobile entertainment devices like the iPod and Sony's PSP.[13]
