AFL Teamcoach is a popular Australian rules football-themed collectible card game. More than 2.2 million people play it in all states and territories except NSW. The series started since 2001, . The current set of cards is the 2007 series. Each pack contains 9 cards and include a gold card. Packs of cards are available from all Newsagents aswell as AFL stores and cost $2.95.

Online Game types


As well as collecting cards users are able to join a fantasy type sport game. This online game has two types of competitions.

Top Team


Uses chose 22 of their best cards. Each user must choose 7 backman, 2 ruckman, 6 midfielders and 7 forwards from their collection of cards. At the end of each round users will receive points based on the actual performance of their chosen cards in that round of the AFL.

4 star


This competion is very similar to the Top Team competition however users chose a total of 4 cards, 1 backman, 1 ruckman, 1 midfield and 1 forward. Prizes for this section of the competition are only able to those people aged 16 years and under. This format was used in 2001 and 2002 and war reintroduced in 2007.

Types of cards



Cards that are available through card packs include common cards, gold cards, checklists and wildcards.

Common Cards


These are the most common card and is the basic card. There is 1 unique common card for every player included in the 2007 set

Gold Cards


Gold cards are worth double points and are quite rare. 1 gold card is included in every card. There is 1 unique card for every player included in the 2007 set

Wild Cards


These cards are extremely rare with 1 card appearing in every 72 cards. A wildcard is a team card. This card can be used at any time and doubles the points of a selected player from the team the card is associated to.

Distribution of cards



In the current 2007 set there are a total of 200 players.
This comprises of
  • 60 Backman
  • 64 Midfielders
  • 60 Fowards
  • 16 Ruckman.


  • Each club has 12 players and 1 team checklist.
    Each club has 1 wildcard
    Each player has a common card and a gold card

    2000


    Never released as it was too complicated. This Teamcoach had certain limits, like the use of cards for different rounds, Doubles in this game were actually very useful as the more you had of one player, the more rounds you can use that player. They came in 6 variations, making a total of 600 cards.

    Some of the tests have found the markets.

    The cards had corners, had the total number of game points, the average and the play rate.

    2001



    The face of 2001 was Wayne Carey

    2001 was the only year where some cards had to be got by packs, such as the Ingerson Silver and Phil Matera Gold, Found in the Starter packs.

    2001 cards were very similar to the 2000 cards, instead of a random round number allocation, highs and lows were introduced, three of each kind. Rather than 6 types of card, there was the Common, Silver and Gold system as used until 2006.

    2002


    The face for 2002 was Shane Crawford

    This was the first year where the rounded edges cards was made. Some extra stats were included on the card, like average Kicks, handballs, goals etc. This was the only year where the Portrait card was Gold rather than Silver.

    2003


    2003 was when the first expansion happened, there were now 150 cards, it also saw the drop of the 4 star team game. A new website was released for 2003.

    A thunderbolt design was used for this year in celebration of Port's first premiership the previous year.

    2006

    The High and Low system was dropped, and marks went up to 3 for all positions.

    Promotion



    Subway Restaurants released a promotional Subway Wildcard Series in early 2005, releasing one star from each club.

    Their television advertising campaign was a rather forgettable one for Nick Riewoldt. He and a kid trading their Teamcoach cards. This was after Nick controversially broke his arm in Round 1 of 2005 against the Brisbane Lions.

    The first TV ads on Teamcoach came in 2005.
