History
Tony Friscia started AMR Research in
April 1986 in Chicago, Illinois, as Advanced Manufacturing Research
to address the technology needs of the factory floor. By the end of
the first year, the company moved to Salem, Massachusetts. Research
in the early period focused on the factory network, but quickly
expanded beyond to all areas of the manufacturing environment. The
company later moved to Cambridge, MA (1988) before settling in
Boston in 1992 where it remains.
Among the milestones during this
period was coining the term “Manufacturing Execution System” or MES
in November 1990, to describe the gap between planning systems and
process control systems. In 1995, AMR Research expanded its
research coverage to offer services in the burgeoning area of
enterprise resource planning (ERP) and supply chain. As part of its
new identity, the company changed its name to AMR Research
incorporating its common nickname “AMR”. AMR Research’s work in
supply chain management led it, in 1996, to co-find the
Supply-Chain Council. Through its work with the council, AMR
Research helped develop the Supply Chain Operations Reference
(SCOR) Model, a framework used across industries to manage and
improve the flow of supplies.
