A Future Loss was created in 2002 under the name “Mushroom Clouds of Faith.” Soon after the kickoff of the new music endeavor the name was changed due to the miscommunication of being a punk band. With the release of “Only One War”(2003) the band began accumulating fans from playing coffee shops and basement shows.
After the release of the CD the lead guitarist, and back up vocalist Josh Grengs moved to Japan to study abroad. With this event the band found former bassist of Scars and Stripes, Ryan Hood to fill the position. The band then began recording their next album, “At Least You’re Not Me”, however with Ryan leaving the band the CD was never finished. In 2005 Grengs returned home for a short stint to help record their next album, “Last One’s Standing,” featuring songs previously recorded on “At Least You’re Not Me” and plenty of new ones that Josh brought back with him.
With the departure of Josh back to Japan, A Future Loss recruited guitarist Sean Weinert. After only playing a few shows over the course of a few months Sean moved to Arizona to pursue a recording career. This event caused A Future Loss to decide it was time to work as a three piece.
They’ve begun writing new music for their upcoming album which will be recorded in the fall of 2008. The album will be recorded at El Rancho Recording by Sean Weinert, who is also back in the band.
Throughout the past five years A Future Loss has shared the stage with other struggling Denver, CO bands, as well as national touring acts. They’ve played at The Gothic, The BlueBird, The Ogden, and Hard Rock Café Denver, playing with bands like The Briggs, The Queers, Much The Same, and I AM GHOST.
As of 1/28/2009 the band is deciding to depart from the music scene. They have two more shows to play and by February 13th 2009 the band will end. Band member Bryan Grengs released this letter to the public:
" After nine great years the band has decided to call it quits. Matt has decided to follow a career of teaching english in South Korea and will be there for a duration of a year. We feel that we cannot keep the band going without our front man and since he is one of the original members we didn't feel it was right for any of us to keep AFL going under the same name. There is no bad blood in the band and we have actually been contemplating this for a while now (anyone notice the lack of shows lately?) This was just the last piece of the puzzle to confirm it was happening. We all personally have been feeling a little abused by the music scene here in Colorado, we have had some awesome times and got to meet and befriend a lot of cool people and bands, but the overall weight of the scene broke our spirits. It was coming to the point it was either our friendships or the band. David, Matt, and I have been friends since the first grade and didn't want the band (which was turning into a business) to hinder our friendships. Some break ups cause disaster and hard feelings but we hope our fans and friends don't hold any grudges against us personally or the band. We love you all and couldn't have asked for better support.
This doesn't mean this will be the last you see any of us in the music scene, or the last nail in the coffin for AFL, Matt will be bringing his guitar to Korea and will be working on songs and I'm sure playing some shows out there. Sean will be in the music scene through his recording studio El Rancho and working on multiple projects for various bands. I will continue to bang the hell out of my drums to let out the anger of the days and hopefully have the chance to jam with some friends. David.... well David will take on music in the form of Guitar Hero. Just kidding. He and I are sure to jam to relive the moments and songs.
Some of you might have heard or know that we are working on an E.P. We still plan on releasing it and hopefully in time for our last show (check out the end of this for our last shows info). We’re in the finals stages of editing then we go on to mix and master and we’re done! Definitely our best recording yet! Make sure you pick it up since it is going to be a part of AFL history.
Thank you everyone who has been a part of the bands life. Every person who has come out to a show, listen to our music, bought some merch, said good job after our set, or just hung out with us for shits and giggles. You’ve impacted us in ways we can’t explain. You all are the reason A Future Loss made it as far as it did and without your support this band would have never seen as many cities and venues as we did. You guys gave us the inspiration to keep pushing and the heart to see that we were affecting someone’s life and that maybe we were doing something good in this world. Thank you all for every ounce that YOU put into the band.
With great love,
Bryan Grengs and the rest of A Future Loss"
