Abarta is a company with divisions that operate in the soft-drink, newspaper, magazine and oil and natural gas industries.
Its current CEO is John F Bitzer III.
Its division Abarta Beverage Group owns and operates four Coca-Cola bottling companies in the United States, while its division called the South Jersey Publishing Company runs The Press of Atlantic City.

History

Abarta was founded in 1963 when John Bitzer Jr, George Roehr, and Don Taylor bought The Press of Atlantic City, and some interests in the Bethlehem and Pittsburgh Coca-Cola bottling franchises, from their father-in-law, Rolland Adams.
The name itself was devised from the first letters of the surnames of Bitzer, Roehr, and Taylor, and of the repeated maiden name of their spouses.

Rolland Adams' other holdings in bottling, as well as the Bethlehem Globe Publishing Company, were in the name of his wife, Pauline.
When she died in 1969, these holdings became owned by the Adams daughters.
Adams retired in 1970, and in 1972 the group dissolved and reinstated the company in order to bring all their holdings together.

Abarta bought the Cleveland bottling franchise in its entirety in 1971, and then founded two divisions under itself, the Summit Supply Company in 1974 and Abarta Gas and Oil in 1979, and thus entered the natural gas market.
The company continued business in Coca-Cola bottling, and then sold the Bethlehem Globe in 1991.
Abarta Metro Publishing was created in 1993 and eventually sold in 2004.
