Abbas Musawi was the Secretary-General and spiritual leader of Hizbullah from 1991 to 1992. Musawi studied at a Shia madrasa in al-Najaf, Iraq, where he was strongly influenced by the teachings of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Musawi returned to Lebanon in 1978.

On 16 February 1992, Abbas, his wife, six-year-old child, and four bodyguards were killed by an Israeli helicopter ambush near the village of Jibsheet in southern Lebanon. An estimated 50,000 Shia Muslims took part in his funeral procession. He is buried in his village called Nabi-Sheeth. Musawi was the mentor of current Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
