Abisko is a village in northern Sweden, near the Abisko National Park located 4 km west of the village. It had 85 inhabitants as of 2005.
Daily passenger electric trains run by SJ AB connect Stockholm with the Norwegian city of Narvik, stopping at both the Abisko village (the name of that railway station is Abisko Östra [east]) and the Abisko Turiststation. Additional regional trains provide links within the Kiruna-Narvik stretch. Abisko is also reachable by car via the highway E10 which links Kiruna and Narvik since early 1980s. Other local forms of local transportation include hiking and dog-sledding in winter. A chair-lift provides access to the summit of nearby Mt. Nuolja.
Abisko[1] is a tiny town in the Lapland region of northern Sweden. It's a popular outdoor destination due to it's proximity with many great national parks, it's trailhead on the spectacular Kungsleden hiking trail combined with it's relatively convenient location on the malmbanan railway between Narvik in Norway and Luleå, which means it can be reached by a overnight train from Stockholm quite easily.
In the summer Veolia[2] runs the Laplandståget service directly from Malmö/Stockholm and Gothenburg. It takes around 25 hours from Malmö and 13 hours from Stockholm. But there are daily trains from Luleå and Gällivare throughout the year. The nearest airport is in Kiruna from where you can either catch the train or a bus to Abisko.
The area is really meant for hiking, but there is a chair lift operating in the summer from the tourist station and 500 meters up the closest mountain.
The tourist camp organises various activities throughout the year, but the real attraction is hiking either on the Kungsleden or the many other trails, out in the spectacular wilderness of the national parks of the area.
There is a rather well equipped shop near Abisko Östra station, which is both stocked up with food and drinks, but also hiking/sporting equipment.
The Storstugan pub inside the tourist station is the friendliest place in town, rather fortunante, since it's also the only place in town, to go for a drink.
The tourist station has both Hostel, Hotel and Cottage accommodation available. There is also a camping ground - although the Every man's right basicly entitles you to sleep anywhere, as there isn't really any uncultivated lands.
