Future Projects
While working independently, Abstract Minds have been able to get their foot in the door and achieve limited recognition within the industry.
The main focus of Abstract Minds however, is the release of their D'ebut album Mind Sex (subject to change).
Due to lack of artist's commitment and other factors such as their focus on graduation from Hampton University (2008), the project has been postponed.
The Architekt (Charles)
Always had a love for music.
Even as a young student in middle school, he quickly adapted to music and decided to play the Alto Sax in high school.
He was able to read music and play in the high school band within one month of learning the saxophone.
With this experience along with his passion for all genres of music, came an evident passion for writing his own songs.
But it wasn’t until meeting his production partner and room mate at Hampton University his freshman year that he really found his outlet: Hip Hop.
The Kartunist (Mike)
The Kartunist had a similar lineage taking up the saxophone very early in life.
Crates and crates of music added to his musical literacy by providing a strong and rich foundation.
The Kartunist describes how his dad would always play artists such as John Klemmer, and Coletrain, to MAZE and the Gap Band.
“I listen to everything describes Kartunist.
Although musically inclined, the Kartunist was never interested in music production.Charles met Michael Mitchell a.k.a.
The Kartunist, his freshmen year as his room mate.
Charles notes that “Mike was really the one who put me on to hip hop.
Before then, I would only listen to commercial music and R&B.” After hearing Murs and 9th Wonder’s “The Animal,” Charles was certain that music was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life.
Early Start and Career
Not too long after Charles started producing hip hop instrumentals, Mike being inquisitive eventually asked for a copy of the Fruity Loops program so that he could take a shot at music production.
Charles recalls his thoughts on the subject adding, “I could tell by his enthusiasm that he was really interested in making music.
So I gave him the program.
I’m not lying to you when I say that in little or no time, Mike had learned more about the program than I did,” (laughing).
A year and plenty of tracks later, Mike and Charles decided to start taking music production seriously and became the production duo; Abstract Minds.
Mike said, “I picked the name ‘Kartunist’ because I like to paint a picture with my production taking the words Cartoon and Tune forming the Kartunist,” (laughing).
Charles added, “I picked “The Architekt” because it symbolizes making something out of nothing.
The architect is the one who lays out the plan, develops and cultivates it into perfection.
Musically, I figure out how I want the song to come about and develop that sound to give you what you want to hear.”
The name “Abstract Minds” came about because of their undefined sound and limitless musical contributions to any and all genres.
“We don’t limit ourselves,” Charles says.
“That’s one problem a lot of producers have and that’s how a lot of them end up never stepping outside the box.” Mike added, “I want to be able to have a song from each genre on every station” (laughs
