Abyssion is a fictional character from the
role
playing game,
Tales of Symphonia, by
Namco.
Abbyssion
In the Snowy City of
Flanoir, Lloyd and his group
met an ill-looking figure kneeling in front of the cathedral. The
man introduced himself as Abyssion and he was from a family of
demon hunters. Thousands of years ago, the demon lord, Nebilim, had
tried to take over
Tethe'alla but was slain by Abyssion's ancestor.
Though defeated, all nine weapons the demon hunter carried were
cursed and scattered throughout the land. His family was also
inflicted and now the taint had spread to Abyssion. Soon, he would
die. However, there was one way to save his life.
Abyssion
explained that he was in the middle of a journey to
find
the weapons, known as the Devil's Arms. He intended on sealing them
away and breaking Nebilim's hold on his bloodline forever. Though
in his current condition, he would not be able to continue his
search for much longer. He then noticed that Colette, a member of
Lloyd's party, was holding a
chakram called the Evil Eye. Startled, Abyssion
immediately told the group that they had a Devil's Arm. He begged
for their help and gave Lloyd the Nebilim Key and a set of twin
swords, the Nebilim. With the Key, they would be able to locate the
Devil's Arms. He then sent them on their way.
Lloyd and his
friends were all enthusiastic about finding the Devil's Arms,
except for Presea, who acted strangely around both the weapons and
Abyssion. She could hear voices coming from the Nebilim blades, and
the demon hunter himself emitted an evil aura that only she could
sense. Nonetheless, she kept this to herself while the others
tracked down the Arms.
Several times Abyssion arrived to
congratulate the group on finding a new Devil's Arm, despite his
supposed ailment. Once they obtained the eighth weapon, the demon
hunter told them that he would be waiting in the Temple of Darkness
where the binding ritual was to take place. After the discovery of
the dark staff, the Heart of Chaos, the party headed off to seal
the Devil's Arms.

In the deepest part of the temple, Abyssion took the nine
weapons. Then, he pulled out an old-looking book and laid it on the
ground in front of the Devil's Arms. Raine was shocked by this,
asking why he had the Necronomicon, the forbidden book of darkness.
The demon hunter finally revealed what had been his true goal from
the beginning: to resurrect Nebilim. Using a spell for reviving the
dead contained within the Necronomicon, the fragments of Nebilim's
soul inside each of the Devil's Arms merged. He then allowed
himself to be possessed by the demon and attacked the
group.
Upon Abyssion's defeat (whether or not he died is unknown
as Genis still talks to him after the battle and unlike the other
death scenes, his body never disappears so he may just be
unconcious) , the Devil's Arms rose from his body and attempted to
take Presea's body as their own. However, the group prevented this
and saved her. After this, Presea said that the weapons had kept on
calling to her, beckoning her to join them. She claimed that this
was due to her soul being empty and lonely, just like Abyssion, who
had been fully affected by the curse.
Note that the story of the
Devil's Arms is merely a sidequest, making Abyssion an optional
boss. This is fortunate for some, as many consider the fight
against Abyssion to be the most difficult battle in the entire
game, even harder than the final boss,
Mithos
Yggdrasill.
The Devil's Arms
The Devil's Arms appear
to be useless at first. They reduce all the characteristics of
their wielder and do almost no damage in battle. However, following
the battle with Abyssion, the power of the Devil's Arms becomes
unlocked. When unlocked, the Devil Arm's attack power is determined
by how many enemies its respective user has ever killed, including
previous playthroughs, provided that the player chooses to transfer
battle data from the Grade shop when starting a new game. Given
time, the Devil's Arms can become the most powerful weapons in the
game. Their grotesque look of the Devil's Arms may possibly be a
reference to the Soul Edge of Namco's Soul Calibur
series.
Evil Eye - a pair of chakrams located in
the Toize Valley Mine in Tethe'alla. They are found lying among the
ruins of the Naplooza Bacura, an animated stone block created to
guard the mine. The first Devil's Arm found and also the item that
first attracts Abyssion's attention towards the group. User:
Colette.Nebilim - a set of
twin blades named after the ancient demon lord, these are the only
weapons that Abyssion managed to find by himself. They are given to
Lloyd along with the Nebilim Key. These twin blades resemble the
Soul Edge from Namco's Soul Calibur series. User:
Lloyd.Disaster - a
kendama. Unable to find
it, the party assumes that it must be in the possession of another.
While spending the night in the Tethe'allan seaside resort of
Altamira, they meet a shady young man who offers to sell them a
kendama. He tells the story of how he lost everything gambling and
wishes to start a new life. Unexpectedly, the Nebilim Key vibrates
near the kendama (it's never explained how a normal person managed
to obtain a Devil's Arm). Amusingly, as soon as he receives the
money, the man runs off into the casino again. User:
Genis.Soul Eater - the other
Devil's Arm to be found in Sylvarant. In the Desert Oasis, Triet,
Lloyd and his friends are told legends of a priest who once found a
cursed sword inside the famous Triet Ruins. He tried to cross the
desert to destroy it but was attacked by a giant worm-like
creature. The priest was never seen again. There are also rumors
that a great monster has recently appeared and started devouring
travellers. Sure enough, as the group searches for the sword in the
area around Triet, they encounter a monstrous Sand Worm. Once
killed, it spits out the Soul Eater. User:
Kratos/Zelos.Fafnir - a dagger
hidden within the Gaoracchia Forest in Tethe'alla. User:
Kratos/Zelos.Gates of Hell -
magic-infused cards locked away inside Tethe'alla's Temple of Earth
and guarded by the Gnomelettes, tiny (and rude) creatures related
to the Summon Spirit Gnome. User:
Sheena.Diablos - an ax found
on top of the Latheon Gorge in Tethe'alla. User:
Presea.Apocalypse - cursed
greaves that have found their way into a place even more
far-fetched than Sylvarant: Welgaia, the Holy City of Cruxis. User:
Regal.Heart of Chaos - a staff
that, like the Disaster, is also being held by someone else; Koton,
a senile antique collector living on Hakonesia Peak in Sylvarant -
again, its a wonder that one of the Devil's Arms found its way into
the hands of an ordinary person, let alone someone based in
Sylvarant. Raine
trades an artifact of hers to get it off the old man. User:
Raine. Boss Battle
In battle, Abyssion
appears as a human with his body morphed with demonic details. An
odd resemblence to the Dragon Ball Z anime series is the fact that
Abyssion's extreme power causes his hair to rise and change color.
Abyssion has the largest move pool in the game, borrowing powerful
attacks from every playable character except Sheena and
Raine.

Double Demon Fang -Abyssion
