The Academic Talent Development Program (ATDP) is an academic summer program run by the University of California, Berkeley. Intended to encourage academic achievement, the program offers courses in a wide variety of fields to California elementary, middle, and high school students. It is managed by the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Education.

History

ATDP first began when, in 1981, Anne Wallach, a teacher from Lowell High School in San Francisco, proposed that a gifted summer program be established at UC Berkeley. In the summer of 1982, the UC Berkeley Gifted Program opened with an attendance of 282 students. In 1989, the Gifted Program was renamed the Academic Talent Development Program, its current name.

The program has expanded significantly since its inception. In the summer of 2006, 2100 students from grades K to 12 attended.

Academics

ATDP is divided into a six-week secondary division for middle school and high school students, and a three-week elementary division for elementary school students.
