An accelerated
student is a student in a school or like that has been given the
oppurtunity to move ahead years or classes above their age,
commonly known as 'skipping years' This means that he or she is
with students several years older than him or her in one or more
subjects. Whereas most schools support accelerated students, there
are those that do not.
For an example: One student who is 14
turning 15 that year would be expected to be in year 9 or maybe 10,
but if the student was given the opportunity to move ahead a year,
then he or she may have, and therefore may be in year 11 or 12, or
maybe even have left school.
Sometimes, students will be able to
accelerate in a single class, thus enabling them to work at their
ability level, a year ahead of the rest of their year.
Some
schools allow students to skip specific subjects by correspondence
or home-schooling.<ref>Randomini is an accelerated
