Acid Reflux is a concluded webcomic which ran from October 15th, 1999 through August 4th, 2002. It garnered some popularity during its short run. The author and artist of Acid Reflux went by the name Emily, choosing not to disclose her last name.

Synopsis

Acid Reflux is a webcomic about God (who is portrayed as a little girl), and her pet universe, Irving (a hand-me-down from her older sister). Shortly after acquiring her new "pet," God accidentally falls into Irving, thus getting a closer view of her universe, who is quite the worse for wear (he suffers from chronic indigestion, hence the comic title of Acid Reflux, named after a medical condition). Irving's universe is shown to be a satirical mixture of the fantasy and sci-fi genres, as well as parodies of Japanese anime and other popular media. God quickly finds that she has lost most of her powers within Irving, and sets out to regain them. Within Irving the universe, the comic follows God's adventures as she seeks to set right the various problems plaguing her world.

The comic featured a playful yet irreverent sense of humor which occasionally employed some fairly bizarre gags, including slugs on pogo sticks and the suggestion that the world was created by television executives. The artist also had some firsthand knowledge of modern Japanese culture, and occasionally parodied topics such as Shibuya fashion.

History

Acid Reflux maintained a remarkably consistent update schedule of 3 or 4 comics a week until April, 2002, at which point the frequency of new comics dropped off sharply and eventually halted in the middle of a story arc. After a long period of inactivity, the site disappeared and its domain name was allowed to lapse. The comic's archives were not reposted until years later, on June 10th, 2004, when the site's original webmaster obtained permission to repost the archives on his personal site, and proceeded to do so. After being moved twice from the webcomic's original location, the archives are now permanently accessible, residing on a site dedicated to fanfiction.
