Acolytes is a 2008 horror, mystery, drama film about three disturbed teenagers who witness a man digging in the woods and their following interactions with this man. It won four awards, in Austin and Melbourne, including best film.[1]

Plot

The three teenagers, exhume a body that was witnessed being buried by a serial killer (unknown to them at the time). After a failed attempt at contacting the police, they blackmail the serial killer into killing a bully who was recently released from jail and attacked one of the boys.

The film contains some German text: Die Erpresser (the blackmailer) and Dienstag (Tuesday). In the manhunt scene, the teenagers fight back against Ian and Mark and Mark eventually beats Gary to death with a rock. It is suggested earlier in the film that Mark and James were sexually abused by Gary, and is confirmed at the conclusion of the manhunt scene.

Cinematography

One of the awards won by the film was for best cinematography (at the Melbourne Underground Movie Awards). The film uses minimal music throughout the film and there are many scenes split by an Australian landscape or suburban sprawl (the film is shot in Queensland).
