Acrowars is a browser-based multiplayer word game based on the popular
Acrophobia game.
The website officially launched in October, 2006.
The game is tick based and consists of 10 rounds.
Each round, a random
acronym is generated and assigned to the players in the room.
Players must then come up with a funny or witty sentence from the assigned acronym.
Players then vote for their favorite submissions.
For example, if the acronym for a given round is "KBOG", a submission might be "Killer Beetle Overthrows Government."
The game demands creativity and a good vocabulary, as well as the ability to think under pressure, all of which make for an exciting game and one that demands skill above all else.
Web Technology
The game makes heavy use of the web browser technology
AJAX which enables a web page to function almost identically to a
desktop application.
This allows the game to be played within a web browser and therefore no download is required to play the game.
Most browser-based games are written in
Java or
Flash.
The problem with such technologies is that not all web users have the
software necessary to view applications written in these technologies.
