Ad Astra is a
science fiction role-playing game.
The 1st Edition of the RPG,
Ad Astra: Children of Empire, was a simple
homebrew RPG, mostly just shared amongst friends with the basic rules shared freely off its homepage.
The game, released in 1988 was very human-centric, and used a cumbersome percentile dice system.
In 1990 the 2nd edition, titled
Ad Astra: The New Age, was released as
shareware.
The game continued to be shared online, both through its original homepage, but also through various peer-to-peer clients.
Thanks to word of mouth the game now has a small but loyal following of a few hundred players worldwide.
The third edition,
Ad Astra: Alien Future will retain the minimalist game elements of 2nd edition, but is expected to be far more experimental.
As well, the 3rd edition will also be released under a form of
Creative Commons License allowing anyone to freely add non-commercial supplements to the body of resources available to the game.
