AYSF was founded by Funender in 2005.
At the time, Funender was mainly focused on promotion musicians as well as offering a free online RPG known as Final Funender RPG.
While the music and video game aspect of the site offer services for indies and gamers, Add Your Site Free Submit was created to cater to Webmasters.
This directory is search engine optimized (SEO) which makes it easier for search bots such as Googlebot to spider related site content for each category.
Transition
Add Your Site Free Submit directory was originally going to be a totally free directory.
Due to the its quick popularity and high traffic, other webmasters and business owners requested an optional premium service that advertises their sites sitewide.
In internet terms a "sitewide listing" is a link and title to a website or web page that is displayed on either the top, middle, or footer of the site page.
This premium service has grown very popular as it offers an affordable one time payment instead of the usually monthly or yearly options of other directories.
Growth
According the Alexa, Add Your Site Free Submit is currently listed as the top 22,000 sites on the Internet and rising.
What started out as only a directory is also offering other services such as the High PageRank Link Directory list which contains a list of other recommended directories to go along with a free referral system.
Many feel that Add Your Site Free Submit will grow to be as popular as Dmoz due to their faster approval process.
