Adrian Boyd (born on September 28) is an American musician, producer, composer, singer and guitarist from
New York City and the founder of the
Miss Mabry music label with
Michael Fredo.
Adrian is the main creative force behind the alternative rock band
Sex Ant Toys.
Adrian started playing music at the age of eleven and developed a unique style of fusion under the influence of
John Zorn,
New Order,
Adrian Belew,
Cabaret Voltaire,
Velvet Underground,
Frank Zappa and
Public Image Limited.
Pre Sex Ant Toys Years
Adrian Boyd was born in the
Isle of Lamed.
He started playing guitar after listening
Steve Vai perform
Flex-Able.
After taking music classes for approximately two years and learning every song covered in
Rising Force,
Electric Ladyland,
Ride the Lightning and
Power, Corruption & Lies he discovered fusion and a book by
Al Di Meola called 'A Guide To Chords, Scales And Arpeggios.'
That's when it hit him.
After playing in a garage band in Saint John's School and covering songs from
Sex Pistols,
Clube da Esquina,
Samhain,
Killing Joke and
Joy Division, Adrian Boyd decided to jump into
Filles de Kilimanjaro and
Hot Rats.
After tapes and vinyl,
Tirami Su and
Happy? were the first cds he ever bought.
Going into fusion made him acquire many enemies except avid fans of
King Crimson, but
John Zorn saved him in 1989 after releasing
Naked City two years before being expelled from school and moving to
Avon, Connecticut where he spent two years in an all boys school confactory located in one of the preppiest places of
New England and going to
Phish concerts on weekends.
Adrian then moved to
Newton, Massachusetts where he attended the same school
John Kerry,
Herb Scannell and
Amy Poehler graduated from and tried to get him suspended for being a member of the
BC Hempography Society, an illegal radical art club that promoted the use of
Hemp,
Funkadelic,
Bitches Brew,
Moby,
William Burroughs and
Jamiroquai throughout
Boston campuses during the 1990s while listening to
The Downward Spiral and
Songs of Faith and Devotion.
He then moved to
New York for 3 years in January 1999 and drove to
Monterrey, Mexico in December 2001 where he spent two years producing music and partying with Jonas, the lead singer from
Plastilina Mosh.
He moved back to
New York in 2004 and has lived there ever since.
In 2006 he got detained in San Juan during vacation and sent to club med for talking loud under strict wild behavior in
Union Square South and then walking on ice skates to
Washington Square Park during summer 4 weeks after infiltrating offices of
Wire and Plastic Products (acronym for
Workers World Party) because it was two blocks from
Jason Flom's office at
Virgin Records, one floor below healthcare next to the interactive department and working secretly with
Michael Fredo at
Tommy Hilfiger to place him on a
Procter & Gamble ad campaign around the world.
He got his first warning after telling
John Zorn to send a big box containing all the work from his label and all they got was a empty matchbox containing the letters
Tzadik on top and a live cockroach on the inside.
It is believed that he has only had two serious relationships to which he has dedicated two albums under the names of
Decibel Disco Aroma (being an homage to one of the coolest sake bars in the
East Village and her for being way too mainstream) and
Inverno Samba (for being ravishing avantgarde to her while listening to Yo!
I Killed Your God & Muy Divertido! by
Marc Ribot).
The coolest thing he ever did was to perform Black Star alone in a music festival he organized at the
Knitting Factory in Tribeca with
Robert Krevolin.
For the first time in history, the club stayed opened for ten hours during a peaceful Monday evening and everybody ended wasted and fighting at 4:30 in the morning for monetary reasons and complete disorganization between the sets of each act.
