Air Combat, released in Japan as Ace Combat, is a semi-realistic flight-sim/action game, it was developed by Namco and was released in 1995 for the Sony PlayStation. It is part of the Ace Combat series. All subsequent games retained the original Ace Combat name.

Air Combat is also the arcade game from Namco in 1992 that simulates an F-16. The game mainly involves dog fighting and has three levels of play; Cadet, Captain and Ace. This game was the predecessor of the PlayStation series. It had an arcade sequel, Air Combat 22.

Story

The story begins when a terrorist force starts an uprising and inflicts massive damage across the country of Kaluga, south of Yuktobania. Efforts to defeat these terrorists through conventional means failed and the situation turns desperate; in response, a mercenary air force has been assembled to take the fight to the enemy and free the nation from the terrorist forces. The boss in the game, which is the last level (level 17) is described as "An airborne fortress". The aircraft is very similar to the Gleipnir from Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception.

Gameplay

Air Combat is mostly considered an "arcade style" flight game due to its semi-realistic physics and the fact that many planes can carry up to 65 missiles, an impossibility in real-life aircraft. The goal of the game is to destroy enemy targets dispersed throughout the various levels and earn money (extra money can be earned by destroying non-target, optional enemies) to purchase additional aircraft and special weaponry, a feature that continues with the current Ace Combat games. The player can choose from several different planes in the game ranging from F-4 Phantoms to Su-27 Flankers and Stealth aircraft, albeit painted in a special "Phoenix" color scheme. optionally the player can select a wingman to accompany them during a mission, the player can "instruct" the wingman to perform one of three different actions.

Reception

Air Combat was awarded Best Flight Sim of 1995 by Electronic Gaming Monthly.^[1]

What went wrong? Whatever it may be, the fact remains that I was forced to walk a different path from the one I envisioned."

Someone special, y'know? I squinted my eyes and confirmed the situation, checked the terrain, air currents, his plane, his maneuvers, and his remaining ammo. I figured I could do it. I knew what I was getting into, but he still outmaneuvered me beyond my expectation."

• "I met him above this very sky. I can still hear the sound of the missile alerts from that day. I received an order to fly back to Directus on my way back from intercept mission on the southern defence line. The order itself wasn't unusual. We kept being deployed fom one mission to the next without even receiving even the basic maintenance. But the situation was the same all around. We were late reaching the operational space. The stationed squadrons had already retreated and warning bells were going off in the city...and the people were looking up to his plane high above the sky...(next sections of dialogue change based on your ace gauge)
  (Knight Path) ...I couldn't see any emotion in his maneuvers. I didn't feel like I was fighting against a human being. I wanted to end that battle as quickly as possible."
  (Soldier Path) ...It felt like he could see through me. He was always one step ahead of me. He matched every combat maneuver I knew until I used up evey trick in the book."

Of course, that was where my luck ran out."

• "The instant he shot me, I pulled the lever. I barely managed to escape from my plane as it burst into flames. After drifting from the blast, I landed below the Round table. It was a wide open, barren wasteland. How long would I have to wait for a rescue party? Radio interference within the Round Table was fierce. The odds of a distress signal of reaching anyone was low. I was at a loss of what to do. Anyway, I'd really gone out with a bang this time. I took that as a sign that it was time for me to retire. But then, I heard a roaring overhead. It was his plane. I was jealous of his calm, flying form. Rather than wait for the rescue team I began to walk towards the nearest base. I was driven by the desire to get back up there and fight him again. Of course, it did take me 3 days to get there."

This is the first game in the Ace Combat series. For other games in the series see the Ace Combat category.

Air Combat is a semi-realistic flight-sim/action game, developed by Namco and released in 1995 for the Sony PlayStation. The name of the game was changed for overseas versions, for example in North America it is called Ace Combat.

Air Combat is also the arcade game from Namco in 1992 that simulates an F-16. The game mainly involves dog fighting and has three levels of play: Cadet, Captain and Ace. This game was the predecessor of the PlayStation series. It had an arcade sequel, Ace Combat 22.

The story begins when a terrorist force starts an uprising and inflicts massive damage across an unnamed country. Efforts to defeat these terrorists through conventional means failed and the situation turns desperate; in response, a mercenary air force has been assembled to take the fight to the enemy and free the nation from the terrorist forces.
