Shigetomo was considered as a very loyal general under the Akechi clan, even serving Akechi Mitsuhide since Mitsuhide's very youth.

When Mitsuhide died during that battle, Shigetomo wanted to be by Mitsuhide's side forever, so he killed himself to join Mitsuhide.
