The Alabama Democratic Party is the local branch of the Democratic Party in the state of Alabama. It is presently chaired by Joe Turnham.

It is the minority party in Alabama. Following the elections of 2008, Democrats hold the following statewide executive offices:

  • Lt. Governor (Jim Folsom, Jr.)
  • Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries (Ron Sparks)

One bright spot for Democrats in Alabama is that they are the majority party in the Alabama state legislature, currently controlling both chambers.

At the federal level, Democrats hold three out of Alabama's seven seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Alabama Democratic Party, like many Democratic parties in the South, tends to be more conservative than the national Democratic Party, especially on social issues, typical of the Dixiecrat philosophy. No Democrat has carried Aalbama in presidential elections since 1976 when Jimmy Carter of neighboring Georgia won the Cotton State.

Democrat Barack Obama received 38.74% of the total statewide vote in Alabama and lost the state to Republican John McCain in 2008.
