Alan Charles Beckwith (born
January 2,
1952) is an
American aerospace engineer and
actor.
Beckwith was born in
Tyrone,
Pennsylvania and grew up in near by Bald Eagle,
Pennsylvania. Upon high
school graduation in
1969, he
entered
Penn State University with a full
scholarship from the
U.S. Air Force to study Aerospace Engineering.
Only 40 such
scholarships were awarded that year in the
United States. He graduated in
1972 with a
B.S..
Was a
fraternity
member of both
Sigma Tau Gamma and
Alpha Phi
Omega.
Alan was an accomplished
painter of
portraits and
landscapes in both oils and acrylics. He took
several prizes and awards throughout
Pennsylvania in the 1960's.
Being a
active spelunker, he did his undergraduate
thesis underground in the Milroy
Cave system in Central
Pennsylvania using
knowledge of
fluid dynamics to explain the formation of
flutes etched on the limestone corridors by analysis of the water
flow.
After college, he entered the
U.
S.
Marine
Corps officer candidate school in
Quantico,
Virginia, and was commisioned a
2nd Lieutenant in
December
1972. He was sent to
Naval Flight Training at N.A.S.
Pensacola,
Florida in
1973. While there, he was accepted into the
University of Florida's master program
in
Astronautics.
Beckwith has an honorable
discharge from both the U.S.A.F. and the U.S.M.C.
Alan holds
membership in the
Screen Actors Guild and The
American
Federation of Television and Radio Artists. As an
actor, he has done work on stage,
television and
film.
