14:55, 7 January 2007 (UTC)Albarella ia a private island in the Gulf of Venice, in the woodland of the Po Delta. 528 ha in total, 1.5 km wide, 5 km length. A nature park with 2 million trees, 2.5 km of beach and 455 moorings.
"Private" means that it is owned by its house owners and by the Marcegaglia group, that also owns another holiday park in Southern Italy : Pugnochiuso. Acces is limited to house owners and people who rent a house. Private guards are present 24h a day.
You find there lots of sport facilities, including a football school, a horse riding court, tennis, windsurfing, several swimming pools, a golf court, a yacht harbour...Shops and some warehouses are present on the island.
In summer there are guided sporting activities and disco in the recreation centre and club.
There's just one road to get there, a 10 km long road and bridge combination along the Po, to the mainland.
You can only enter Albarella if you have a house or if you sleep in one of the two hotels.
It's also a paradise for bikers: daily traffic within the island is normally done by bike or in electric golf cars. Both can be hired locally.
There is a lot of nature in the center of the island: thousands of trees, tens of birds species, rabbits and some deers. The eastern coast is the Adriatic,a real sea, the Western coast is called "Mare Vostrum", which has become a lake with sweet water. This Mare Vostrum is used for fishing and aquatic sports.
The island was -like nearby Venice itself- created by grouping en extending smaller existing islands. Most of the houses are built after 1975. There is one mayor exeception: the "Ca tiepolio", a 18th c. Venetian Villa, used for festivities.
The island belongs to Italy. Official languange is Italian. Among the founders and owners, German-speekers play an important role. By consequence, German and English are commonly used by Albarella's services.
Visitors are encouraged to pay on the island with a local bank card, the Albacard, which can be perchased on arrival. It offers rebates on a lot of services.
In summer, people from different countries in Europe meet here, especially from Italy, Germany, Switserland, Austria, the UK, Belgium, Netherlands and France.
